2hr Cardboard Chair Exercise
Published August 15, 2006 by Sim inToday at uni we had a very interesting Studio class!
In groups of 3 we were given a 2m x 2m piece of corrugated cardboard. With this cardboard, we were to construct a chair that was strong enough to handle someone sitting on it, so around 65-70kg.
Without glue or stickytape - only cuts, folds and slots.
The trick is to use triangulation or curvature (this cardboard = triangulation).
So 2 hours to design, evaluate, refine (measurements/sizes) and build! Awesome fun, and great to see a big variety of chairs were designed and made.
Ours was of the lounge/recliner variety, easily the best looking for style and simplicity. The construction behind it is very simple yet very strong!
